Humour or humor (see spelling differences) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which taught that the balance of fluids in the human body, known as humors (Latin: humor, "body fluid"), control human health and emotion. People of all ages and cultures respond to humour. The majority of people are able to experience humour, i.e., to be amused, to laugh or smile at something funny, and thus they are considered to have a sense of humour. The hypothetical person lacking a sense of humour would likely find the behaviour induced by humour to be inexplicable, strange, or even irrational. Though ultimately decided by personal taste, the extent to which a person will find something humorous depends upon a host of variables, including geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education, intelligence and context. For example, young children may favour slapstick, such as Punch and Judy puppet shows or cartoons such as Tom and Jerry. Satire may rely more on understanding the target of the humour and thus tends to appeal to more mature audiences. Nonsatirical humour can be specifically termed "recreational drollery". GNU Free Documentation License Comedy has a popular meaning (stand-up, along with any discourse generally intended to amuse), which differs from its academic definition, namely the comic theatre, whose Western origins are found in Ancient Greece. The theatrical genre can be simply described as a dramatic performance pitting two societies against each other in an amusing agon or conflict. Comedy contains variations on the elements of surprise, incongruity, conflict, repetitiveness, and the effect of opposite expectations, and there are many recognized genres. From Wikiquote under the

Q. How do you feel about comedy shows that have random and nonsensical humor? Asked by Nero T. Pickle - Thu Sep 17 11:12:31 2009 - Comedy - 2 Answers - Comments A. Big Bang Theory has a oddly inflated sense of humor. You have to have knowledge of pop culture, as well as stereotypes, and even basic scientific conceptualization. Frasier had a great sophisticated humor. Again very well rounded with cultural references, stereotypes, laced with high brow humor. Rosanne was always a random humor type of show for me. Never sure if the physical humor, familial jabs, or some other wacky joke was going to bring me to my knees in hysterical humor. I think The Simpsons were also like that as well as Family Guy. Stewie makes jokes that hit me a few minutes later and leave me going, 'oh man did he really just do that?'. But sometimes I'm sitting there going, 'did they really need that?'. Q. I ask because I see so many people in this forum who seem to lack a sense of humor. They take everything literally and it seems to be an equal amount of men and women who lack a funny bone. So, on a scale of 1-10, how important is a sense of humor to you when you choose a mate? Why is it important or not important to you? Asked by Lost Soul - Mon Dec 1 14:15:33 2008 - Gender & Women's Studies - 20 Answers - Comments A. 10. If a girl I dig can't laugh at me or herself the relationship won't last more than a week. Humour is not only my best medicine but it's my only medicine. I can be with the hottest girl alive but if she takes me or herself too seriously, it'll last about a week (maybe two weeks tops).
